Friday Afternoon Roundup - Hamasbara

These tactics, born out of the Twitter age and the complete collapse of journalistic ethics, aren’t just a defense of Islamic terrorism, but they also borrow some of the tactics of the terrorists they defend.

Hamasbara is less dependent on developed stories and more on Tweets and blog posts. Its practitioners are just activists with a media forum. Their smear campaigns depend on quick hit and run attacks. They bring a story into being out of thin air and move on to the next attack just as quickly.

There is something of the Hamas suicide bomber in their willingness to constantly self-destruct their reputations, but journalistic credentials don’t mean what they used to. Activist journalists help manufacture a story that is picked up by second-tier media blogs and mainstream media outlets.

In a perpetual news cycle, smears are instantaneous, but they also vanish instantaneously.

National Jewish Democratic Council: Liberal Jews Worn Down Defending Obama

Well now that we’ve gotten gay marriage out of the way, next stop is polygamy station.

Obama is dramatically rewriting the reality of his Muslim family and the Luo tribe, which is about as feminist as Mohammed.

A woman in a traditional Luo context has no embedded right to inherit land from her deceased husband. Additionally a woman does not inherit land from her natal family, as only male children are obliged to inherit land. A family member, most of the time a brother of the diseased, inherits not only all property, but also the widows. Within the polygamous setting of the Luo society a man often has three and more wives. Inheritances can easily double the size of a family.

Yes, men inherit the “wives” in the literal sense of the word. It’s known as wife inheritance and has resulted in the spread of AIDS.

Widows often call their inheritors “terrorists” who make their life more dreadful.

“We are faced with an enemy whose goal is to conquer the world by subversion and infiltration or, if necessary, by open war.”

The speaker was Senator John F. Kennedy and he was discussing the Communist Control Act that he had co-sponsored. The Act did what had been previously thought impossible; it outlawed the Communist Party.

The latest bill to fight an enemy whose goal is also to conquer the world by subversion, infiltration and open war doesn’t have a Kennedy co-sponsor. Instead it has the two members of Congress who have fought the hardest to expose the Muslim Brotherhood; Michele Bachmann and Louie Gohmert.

Can someone please help out the New York Times? While it has come up with 560,000 photos of ten different crying men covered in blood while holding someone’s dead children, it can’t seem to find a single photo of a Hamas terrorist.

"Here’s what Eileen Murphy, the Times’ vice president for corporate communications, says:

Our photo editor went through all of our pictures recently and out of many hundreds, she found 2 very distant poor quality images that were captioned Hamas fighters by our photographer on the ground."

Like Bigfoot, many think that Hamas might even be a legend. Certainly not even the most daring photojournalist has come away with a single photo of the elusive creature known as the Hamas terrorist.
But if you happen to come across a photo of a Hamas terrorist, please email them to eileen.murphy@nytimes.com or Tweet them to her at @NYTeileen.

Red Rosa, with an estimated net worth of $26 million, wants to tax your soda.

DeLauro introduced the Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Tax Act, also known as the “SWEET Act,” on Wednesday, which would impose a 1 cent excise tax per teaspoon of caloric sweetener in soda, energy drinks, sports drinks, and sweet teas.

“This act is intended to discourage excessive consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages by increasing the price of these products,” according to the text of the legislation

The tax is targeted at Americans who are low-income, African American, Hispanic, and children, which the legislation calls “priority populations” due to higher rates of obesity and diabetes.

It all started with a lemonade stand. “I took my kids, and I said, let’s go buy some lemons and make lemonade for the soldiers driving by,” said Doron Elbaz, the owner of a farm next to Moshav Maslul, a small town near the Gaza border

Now 250 volunteers are cooking 30,000 meals per day. Twenty thousand meals are sent to troops and other people in the field, while he serves 10,000 in a makeshift camp set up outside of his farm where soldiers can come to relax or hang out. He estimates about 50,000 people come through his rest stop every day, including volunteers, soldiers, police, medics, and other people associated with the war effort.

At the rest stop, which is called “Everything is free for soldiers,” volunteers offer their services to help soldiers relax. A dozen masseurs have set up tables to offer free massages. A barber was offering free haircuts and free shaves. Two mothers were helping soldiers wash their clothes in a sink.

Colorado was supposed to pull in $180 million from drug sales. Estimates have now fallen to around $40 million. That sounds like a lot until you realize that a single cop costs in the neighborhood of $100,000 a year. (Never mind what his pension is going to cost.)

Here’s what dealing with a few homeless people costs in just police patrols.

The Denver City Council unanimously approved a $1.8 million budget increase for the Denver Police and Sheriff’s Departments.

The money will be used to hire additional police officers to patrol LoDo, the Ballpark Neighborhood and the 16th Street Mall.  It will also be used to cover increased arrest and detention costs.

New York Magazine, which shamelessly ran the phony Katie Zavadski exonerating Hamas of the kidnapping and murder of three teens based on a Tweet from a BuzzFeed contributor (because journalism) ran a smug post titled “We Are All David Frum, False-Rumor-Spreader.”

Seriously. The magazine whose idea of journalism is sourcing a few Tweets to falsely claim something untrue about a major world event and that continues to run the same false story, is acting as if it’s somehow superior to Frum.

Why? Because David Frum apologized and New York Magazine’s Adam Moss and Katie Zavadski will never apologize because the concept of honesty is as alien to them as it is to Hamas.

New York Magazine’s smugness is really the immunity from accountability that comes from being on the right side of the left.

Now George Will is advocating a perfectly commonplace liberal position here. The problem is that he’s also advocating conservative fiscal positions and the two don’t go together.

You can’t have liberal social welfare policies and conservative fiscal policies. This one is really a no brainer. It’s the ultimate no brainer.

We’re not even talking about the absurdity of some libertarians who want open borders and no welfare state. George Will is essentially advocating for open borders, a welfare state and fiscal conservatism.

Let’s set aside the political demographics. The basic thing is that you’re not going to be able to settle tens of thousands of teenagers (they aren’t 8-year-olds with teddy bears) without spending a lot of whole taxpayer money.

So let’s be honest about that.

House passes $225m. Iron Dome funding bill after Senate approval

The House’s 395-8 vote in favor follows Senate adoption of the legislation by voice vote earlier in the day.

The 8 + 1 that needed to be pushed

Despite almost universal support for Israel in Congress, the Iron Dome money appeared in doubt only a day ago as Senate efforts stalled after an effort by Republican Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma to find cuts elsewhere in the budget to pay for the aid. Earlier, senators attempted to lump the Israel money into a broader spending bill that included border security and wildfire assistance money. That bill failed to get the necessary 60 votes on Thursday, and the House had little interest in it, anyway. Both chambers turned their attention to a separate Israel bill Friday.
Voting against the measure in the House were Democrats Keith Ellison of Minnesota, Zoe Lofgren of California, Beto O’Rourke of Texas and Jim Moran of Virginia, and Republicans Justin Amash of Michigan, Walter Jones of North Carolina, Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Mark Sanford of South Carolina.
