Let's get it straight. This isn't sour grapes and it isn't business as usual. We're not opposed to Obama because he's a Democrat or a Liberal. If our disagreements with him were just political, we could join the others in wishing him well and hoping he steers the ship right. We can't. As we mark the countdown toward the ridiculously extravagant $150,000,000 Obama inauguration , Obama's radical millionaire donors and a few of the hoi polloi are preparing to party like it's 1999, even while the economy is looking distinctly 1989. It seems lately as if all our laws can be reduced to one single law, "Whatever You Do, Don't Upset the Muslims." 9/11 proved that defending ourselves against terrorism takes a backseat to Muslim sensitivities. The cartoon controversy proved that for the West, Freedom of Speech takes a backseat to offending Muslims, whether by censorship or by self-censorship. Year after bloody year the American Civil War dragged on with a terrible toll in lives squandered while Lincoln replaced general after general, until a terrible lesson was finally learned at great cost. To finish the war and overrun and destroy the enemy's armies. There is one the hand self-congratulation over how much Israeli PR has improved, and on the other hand handwringing over how much better Israel's PR needs to be. And while the PR certainly has improved, it's a case of the wrong battle being fought on the wrong front. Israel's problem isn't PR, it's that Pro-Israel activists keep trying to make their case to an innately hostile left wing media in Europe and America. On paper it was a fairly minor though embarrassing crisis, Blagojevich, the corrupt Governor of Illinois, had attempted to sell a Senate seat out from under Obama. After Obama and the Democratic Congress rejected in no uncertain terms his right to appointment a Senator, he went and did it anyway. At first the Democrats stood strong, warning that Burris wouldn't be seated, but after Burris did arrive and his rejection became the major story of the new Congress-- they gave in. The UN Security Council has predictably enough called for a ceasefire, and somewhat less predictably the Bush Administration pulled back and let it happen. What a ceasefire is supposed to accomplish is anyone's guess, but for the moment it's not accomplishing anything, as Israel has shown enough gut s to reject it. Let's get one thing straight, terrorism is not a successful military tactic, it's a successful political tactic. Viewed from a purely military perspective, terrorist tactics may be devastating to a civilian population, but achieve next to nothing strategically. A suicide bomber detonating himself in a crowd accomplishes nothing except to spread terror. Terrorism exploits not a military weakness, but a political one... so when terrorists are winning, don't blame the soldiers-- blame the politicians. Synagogues set aflame, mobs marching through Jewish neighborhoods shouting hateful slogans against Jews, boycotts of Jewish owned businesses and assaults and murders of Jews in Europe were supposed to have ended with the fall of the Third Reich.
