Who knew the Democrats were so patronizing to “brown” people? Quite obviously, they don’t have any expectations that Egyptians and Jordanians can meet Western standards of government and so feel no real need to even try to encourage them (forget about penalizing them - that would hurt their self-esteem in the same way that leaving a child to redo a grade because they failed every course would). So, the West ignores them the way an adult would ignore an obstreperous child as an ultimately harmless annoyance.

Israel, on the other hand, is seen as Western. The paradox there is that while it meets and sometimes exceeds its peer Western countries, it is uniquely held to a standard nearing “perfection”. In a sense, the Jewish state is expected to embody Christian principles that no Western Christian country models and they inhabit a far safer environment than does Israel.

Looked at a bit differently, Israel becomes the blank slate on which other countries list their own deficiencies and grievances more as an act of expiation than an attempt to address them. Israel has become the test for the politics of others - even or especially where there is no actually analogous situation and that predetermines the negative judgment on Israel.

The larger picture no one wants to see. The double standard is very revealing.
