Things went rapidly from "staged" scenes" to full-on "creativity" in the darkroom, before the era of the US Civil War. Playing with various grades of papers, tweaking the chemicals and "dodging and burning" to highlight or disguise various parts of an image were the stock in trade of every serious photographer.<br /><br />Multiple exposures? Look up the fake fairy fotos.The movie business, being the ultimate fantasy factory, was at it from day one in the late 19th century. Refinements like masking, split screens, etc. were daily fare by the 1920's. Rear and front projection, (cinematic, not the psychological version), popped up everywhere; just another artistic artifact.<br /><br />Just remember that ALL of the "space" special effects, like "2001", a Space Odyssey" (1960's) and the early "Star Wars" movies 1970's) relied on PURE analogue for the action AND for a lot of the "fine detail" of "spaceship instrument panels", etc.<br /><br />Video (analogue initially) heralded in "real-time" "fakery". With the advent of colour TV, green or blue screen processes (see the nightly TV weather for modern iterations) are INTEGRAL to the biz. I was messing around with sprites and layer manipulation on a Commodore Amiga back in 1985.<br /><br />These pathetic Dem. operatives are a part of the world of "creative image manipulation" but, as per type, they decry the use of these technologies by "the other". See also many other "hot-button" technologies.<br /><br />As for "live-action" fakery: Mz.
