More disturbingly, another section suggests "RIS “infiltrate[ing] a source into the network of a ______________ who compiled a dossier of information on Trump’s activities."

It's not clear why the latter would be classified if it's a reference to Christopher Steele: the ex-spook hired through cutouts to produce the Russia conspiracy theory for the Clinton campaign. Unless the reference is to Steele's real source. RIS would be a reference to Russian Intelligence Services.

Steele wasn’t just a hatchet man hired by Fusion GPS to produce opposition research for the Clinton campaign. He had been selected because he was a trusted FBI source and whatever he produced would then be used by Hillary allies and Fusion GPS to generate an FBI investigation of the Trump campaign.

Hillary’s allies in the campaign and the FBI weren’t interested where Steele was getting his information. And even when the Crossfire Hurricane team learned that it might be a hostile power, they didn’t care because they no longer saw Russia as the enemy: Trump was the enemy they were going to destroy.

How was Christopher Steele able build his private intelligence network without a country behind him?

Steele’s network appeared to be drawn from Russian oligarchs. The oligarch in post-Communist oligarchies like Russia and China often acts as a front for government authorities, running former state industries and partnering with foreign companies while holding the secret wealth of the leadership. Oligarchs are privileged, but also threatened because they’re the brokers of the dirty business of the regime, and maintain a balancing act, buying homes abroad and sending their children to the West.

The UK is a favorite destination for Russian oligarchs and Steele might have believed that they wanted an influential fellow like him to owe them some favors in case they fell out of favor with Putin. But why would any truly significant players put their lives and fortunes at risk to pass intel on to an ex-spook? Steele’s informants were much more likely stringing him along on behalf of the Russian spooks.

Steele wasn’t playing the Russians. The Russians were playing him. His informants were double agents.

Every time Steele went hunting for information, Moscow gained insight into what the people paying him were interested in. Steele wasn’t passing information from Russian sources to his clients. He was telling Moscow what information about Russia his clients, Fusion GPS or the FBI, were searching for. And enabling the Russians to decide what disinformation they wanted to use Steele to spread around.

Essentially, Steele had become a Russian asset.

Beyond Trump and Crossfire Hurricane, the footnote indicates that Steele’s tainted network may have been compromised and was feeding Russian disinformation to the FBI. When Steele was tasked with assembling material on Trump for the Clinton campaign and the FBI, he reached out to a network of confidential sources and found Russian intelligence officers eager to exploit this intriguing scenario.

What would a hostile foreign power do when an operative for one of its political opponents comes looking for proof that its rival is secretly working for them? Exactly what the Russians did. Provide confirmation, but taint it. The Steele dossier contained numerous basic errors. No genuine expert on Russia could have produced it. But Steele treated it all as raw intelligence to be passed along.

And if no one on the Clinton campaign or at the FBI bothered to verify it, that was their problem.

Plausible disinformation would have just tainted Trump. But the Russians wanted to taint everyone. Especially their opposite numbers in the FBI. And partisan corruption on our side let them do it.

The Russians had compromised Steele and through him the FBI and the Clinton campaign.

And then they burned everyone.

They were able to do it because Crossfire Hurricane was not a counter-intelligence investigation, but a counter-Trump investigation. The Russians were able to compromise our counter-intelligence by exploiting its corruption and divisions, the same way that they did our political system.

Stringing along Steele had paid off for Moscow in a very unexpected way. After generations of effort, the Russians seriously damaged our political system and intelligence agencies. They transformed the image of their own faltering regime, trying to figure out how to squeeze the last ruble out of its energy assets, into a superpower that could determine the outcome of American elections with its spycraft.

And, as in the Cold War, they didn’t have to do any of the hard work. Their lefty allies did it for them.

After building up Steele’s worthless dossier into an FBI investigation of the next POTUS, a pittance in Facebook ads, most of which post-dated the election, were turned into proof of a rigged election.

All the Russians really did was inject disinformation, not into social media, but the media, and into the Clinton campaign. The Democrats built up the disinformation, spread it around, and weaponized it. Their agenda was to hurt Trump, but the Russian agenda was, as with any hostile power, to divide America.

What the Russians really wanted was to weaken whoever won in 2016. Steele was their useful idiot. Once Steele had passed on the disinformation, the Democrats and their media allies went to work weakening the country, accusing Republicans of working for Moscow, when they were the ones tearing apart the country and undermining the President of the United States using Russian disinformation.

Trump Derangement Syndrome allowed the Russians to subvert Democrats and elements of the FBI.

The louder the Democrats and the media spread the false claim that President Trump was being controlled by Moscow, the more they could obscure the reality that Moscow was controlling them.

As in the Manchurian Candidate, the Russian assets were shouting the loudest about Russia.

But who else would be so invested in building up the myth of an omnipotent Putin and a mighty Russia? The idea that Russia could determine the outcome of American elections was Russian disinformation.

There had already been strong suspicions that the Steele dossier was Russian disinformation. Even Christopher Steele refused to deny speculation that this might be the case. But footnote 350 reveals that Crossfire Hurricane’s counter-intelligence investigation was well aware of it.

The Russia Hoax was not just a deep corruption of the DOJ and the FBI by Obama and Clinton Democrats. It was also a profound counter-intelligence failure that allowed the Russians to exploit that corruption. Had the FBI done its job in a non-partisan manner, it would have deterred Russian efforts to plant disinformation, whether in the crude form of leaked emails, or the sophisticated form of opposition research, instead partisan figures like McCabe and Strzok put party ahead of country.

Vladimir Putin got what he wanted, not from President Trump, but from his Democrat enemies.

Moscow had not seriously thought that its operatives, whether at the Internet Research Agency, WikiLeaks, or whoever was feeding Steele stories about urine-soaked hotel rooms, while trying not to giggle, were ever going to determine the outcome of the 2016 election. What it wanted was to weaken the winner, whether in the Democrat and Republican primaries, or the general election.

And throughout this process, Democrats and Never Trumpers made the best useful idiots.

Hostile foreign powers don’t limit their hostility to Republicans or Democrats. Only useful idiots think that they do. And idiots are useful when they allow a hostile foreign power to divide and conquer, militarily or politically, weakening it through internecine warfare so that it is unable to interfere.

$100,000 in Russian Facebook ads didn’t taint our election. The $100 million in media programming falsely claiming that the election was tainted did that. The disinformation spread by Democrats and their media allies weakened this country, destroyed the credibility of the FBI, and undermined President Trump. That is exactly what Moscow wanted. And what the Democrats and their allies gave Moscow.

What the declassified footnote reveals is that this was not an unintentional treason. They knew.

Daniel Greenfield is a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the David Horowitz Freedom Center. But then the Russians actually shaped Labour’s entire election strategy in this election.

And they used the media to do it.

With Jeremy Corbyn’s numbers tanking due to everything from his support for terrorists to his anti-Semitism and general unpleasantness, the leftist leader unveiled documents claiming to show evidence of a secret deal with the United States over Britain’s failing socialized medicine NHS.

“We have now got evidence that under Boris Johnson the NHS is on the table and will be up for sale. He tried to cover it up in a secret agenda and today it has been exposed," Corbyn whinged. “We are talking here about secret talks for a deal with Donald Trump after Brexit.”

Corbyn was blatantly lying about the documents and what was in them. The false claims about an NHS sellout became the central thrust of Labour’s political campaign in the 2019 election.

But what was more interesting was where those documents had come from.

The documents had first appeared on Reddit. In early December, Reddit announced that in coordination with law enforcement and experts, the accounts behind the leak were taken down as part of a Russian disinformation campaign. The sources of these claims, Graphika and the Atlantic Council, were the same as the ones that had been used by the media as credible sources on previous Russian campaigns.

And it wasn’t Johnson and the Tories the Russians were trying to help, but Corbyn and Labour.

A Twitter account using the same name as the Reddit account had even tagged Corbyn in a link to the materials from the Russian disinformation campaign.

When Labour refused to state how they received the documents, the media just shrugged.

The repeated refusals of Labour figures associated with Corbyn to explain the source of the documents was as good as an admission that they had not obtained them from legitimate sources.

Asked in an interview where the documents came from, Corbyn insisted that it didn’t matter and then claimed that the documents leaked by the Russians showed “why the prime minister has refused to release the report on Russian interference in British politics.”

The Russian interference in British politics wasn’t in the report, it was in his own house.

The Russian campaign calculatedly tried to stir up animosity between the US and the UK in order to sabotage Brexit, prevent a trade deal between the US and the UK, and help Corbyn perform well enough to retain his leadership role in Labour. Why the Russians might have wanted those things is obvious.

A dysfunctional EU serves Moscow’s purposes better than an independent UK able to set its own defense and foreign policies. Frustrated leavers would become radicalized, making them useful targets for provocateurs with ties to Moscow. And Corbyn’s Momentum was part of a British Left that had longstanding ties to the Soviet Union whose old KGB operatives were now running Russia. And were eager to tap into the old networks of fellow travelers that had been cultivated in the Communist days.

The Russians hadn’t been cultivating Johnson. They had been cultivating Corbyn for a long time.

Last year, Ján Sarkocy, a Cold War Czech spy working in the UK under cover as a diplomat, had come forward to accuse Corbyn of being a paid informant who had supplied information to the enemy.

“He was our asset, he had been recruited. He was getting money from us,” Sarkocy said.

Documents substantiated contacts between Corbyn and Sarkocy. Corbyn's codename allegedly had been COB and had allegedly tipped off the Communists to actions by British intelligence.

Worse still, Sarkocy claimed that Corbyn had been recruited "under Russian supervision."

"All the information we received, not only from him but also from another, supporting source, was regarded in Moscow as first-rate,” Sarkocy claimed.

Unlike Steele, Sarkocy had been in a position to actually know what he was talking about. But the media hurriedly rushed to clear Corbyn of the charges even as they went on insisting that the secret Steele influenced report would prove that Johnson was a Russian asset. While the charges against Johnson were farfetched, like Bernie Sanders, Corbyn’s sympathy for the Soviet Union was no secret.

Corbyn had appeared at the 40th Congress of the Communist Party of Great Britain to urge disarmament in the face of the Soviet Union. More recently, the alleged Marxist had claimed that “NATO was founded in order to promote a Cold War with the Soviet Union.” And, keeping the special relationship alive, he blamed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on American expansionism.

His roster includes Andrew Murray, a former member of the Communist Party, and his chief strategist, Seumas Milne, had mourned the fall of the Berlin Wall, and defended its leaders against claims of atrocities, arguing that, “Communism in the Soviet Union, eastern Europe and elsewhere delivered rapid industrialisation, mass education, job security and huge advances in social and gender equality. It encompassed genuine idealism and commitment.”

And the Communists had announced that they wouldn’t run candidates, but try to help Labour win.

After Corbyn’s extensive ties to Communists, allegations by a former spy that he was a paid informant, the Russians tried to help Corbyn with a disinformation campaign and leaked documents, and the media insisted that the Russians couldn’t have been trying to help Corbyn. And that Corbyn knew nothing.

The same media outlets smearing Trump and Johnson as Russian assets based on nothing, who had falsely claimed that Trump’s victory and Brexit were the work of the Russians based on deliberate misrepresentations about Russian ad campaigns, refused to make the obvious connections between an alleged former Russian asset, his circle of former Communists, and a Russian campaign to help them.

The media wouldn’t know an actual Russian asset if it went out and voted for one.

After years of entertaining us with scary stories about Russian election interference, when it actually happened, the outlets that had cried wolf, actually helped the Russians, and then tried to cover it up.

A funny thing happened on the way to the Kremlin, the Russian election interference was helping the same old Marxists that the old KGB men running Moscow had built longstanding relationships with.

In the UK, Russian election interference had been meant to aid Momentum’s Labour Party takeover. Meanwhile in the US, after the collapse of Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and his clique of socialists has a real shot at taking over the Democrat Party. Whom did the leaked emails help in the 2016 election? It wasn’t Trump. Voters didn’t care about internal Democrat dirty laundry in the national election.

But Bernie and his people used the fallout to gain influence in the DNC. He now polls at number two.

The internal Democrat conflict between Clintonites and Sandernistas, different factions of the Left, was used to frame Trump and Republicans when the real beneficiaries were Bernie Sanders, Keith Ellison, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, her squad and the rest of the Corbynized inner circle of Berniestan.

The Sanders and Corbyn campaign share the same stable of activists. If the Russians were helping Corbyn, it’s a good bet that they were helping the socialist who honeymooned in the USSR.

How much support could Sanders expect from Moscow if he becomes the nominee?

The media can spot Russian election interference from a mile away when it isn’t there. It won’t touch actual Russian election interference even when it’s up to its eyeballs in the real thing.

Daniel Greenfield is a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the David Horowitz Freedom Center. Adam Schiff, Rep. Maxine
Waters, Rep. Jerry Nadler, Rep Ted Lieu, and many other political reps were every bit as bad as the ‘experts’. Some, like Schiff, are doubling down and will go on investigating Russian collusion until the media stops inviting them on morning shows to discuss the nothing that they found last week and the week before.

Oddly, no one is blaming the political arsonist who started the dumpster fire that is Russiagate.

The Russian conspiracy theory was invented by the Clinton campaign. It was used as a pretext for spying on Trump associates. And then became an argument for invalidating the results of the 2016 election.

And while the Republicans and Democrats tore each other apart over Russiagate, Hillary Clinton sipped her chardonnays and spent the evenings cackling madly at the TV while watching Washington D.C. burn.

The Russiagate conspiracy theory had multiple purposes. The most cynical one was exempting Hillary and her Clintonworlders from any of the blame for the election defeat. Invoking Russia was also an effort to create an election issue that Clinton, a former Secretary of State, could claim expertise on. It would also neatly counter Trump’s focus on Islamic terrorists and on China with a Cold War boogeyman.

Russia split lefties along interventionist lines. Hard core anti-war types became Russia skeptics. Most of the rest went along because they hated Trump more than they cared about foreign policy. That’s why, aside from Israel, foreign policy has mostly been absent from the 2020 battles even as the radical primaries push Democrat candidates further leftward on a wide variety of domestic issues.

That’s strikingly different from the 2016 primaries where Hillary’s opponents repeatedly attacked her over the Iraq War. This time around, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard is the only candidate to run on a leftist foreign policy platform. And has next to nothing to show for it. Even Senator Bernie Sanders, a Castro and Soviet sympathizer, is carefully steering clear of foreign policy except for the ritualistic bashing of Israel.

Why is foreign policy out of bounds? One reason is a surplus of inexperienced candidates who have spent hardly any time in national office, some who never did, squatting in the 2020 clown car. But a big part of the reason is that Hillary Clinton’s domestic positions are seen as fair game for lefty critics, but, due to Russiagate, her foreign policy people and her international positions are viewed as off-limits.

2020 candidates have a choice between endorsing Hillary Clinton’s interventionism, “We came, we saw, he died”, which would earn them the ire of grass-roots leftists, or avoiding the subject altogether. The clowns in the 2020 clownmobile car don’t want to step on Russiagate trip wires or offend the lefties.

That’s why the only safe subject to tilt leftward on is Israel.

After the Mueller report fell, they may be a little bit more willing to question interventionism, but the base remains passionately convinced that Russia plotted to put President Trump in the White House.

The post-Mueller poll by Reuters shows 84% of Democrats still believe in collusion. 57% strongly agree.

Hillary Clinton may not be a 2020 honored guest, but her legacy is safe. 2020 Dems will be cautious about criticizing her, not only because she still has a fan base, but because she never really lost. The election was stolen by a bunch of Russian bots on Facebook. And no lessons, except for the need to censor social media, have been learned from her defeat. Once again, Hillary Clinton got away with it.

The media deserves plenty of the blame. But MSNBC, CNN, the New York Times and the Washington Post, not to mention the outlets more explicitly tied to the Steele report, were acting as Hillary’s greedy ideological catspaws. They got rich off the hoax, but they didn’t invent it. Hillary Clinton’s people did.

Any real reckoning should begin with the mother of all the hoaxes.

But that too is very risky. Hillary Clinton tied in Obama’s people into the conspiracy. Any reckoning of Hillary’s role in Russiagate would rebound and take down sizable chunks of the Obama administration.

Once again, Hillary Clinton used complicity, tying multiple interests into mainstreaming her hoax, that her lie had become too big to fail. Like the banking system, it would take too much down with it. The media is a safer target. Its only collateral damage is its non-existent credibility. Obama’s people however committed actual crimes. Eavesdropping on the political opposition is redolent of Watergate.

And while the Dems no longer need Hillary, they very much need Obama. Especially if the top of the 2020 ticket ends up being a white New Englander with as much appeal to black people as mayonnaise.

Take down Hillary over Russiagate, and Obama goes with her. It’s safer to just leave her alone.

Any meaningful reckoning of the Russiagate hoax won’t end with the media. It will follow it through Fusion GPS, the DNC, and Clinton associates who hoped to swing the election with one last dirty trick. It will trace the passage of the Clinton conspiracy theory through the DOJ and the FBI. It will measure the institutional damage inflicted on the government, not just the permanent tainting of the 2016 election.

Nobody complicit in Russiagate is about to allow that to happen. And so everyone, from the media on down, is willing to be Hillary’s fall guys instead. The Clintons have never had a shortage of those.

Hillary Clinton’s political career is over. But despite the odds, she’s managed to evade blame not only for her crimes, but for her terrible political instincts and failures. And she is able to sit back and watch Democrats and Republicans still fighting it out over a game that she set into motion years ago.

It’s hard not to believe that she doesn’t feel glee at the damage she is continuing to inflict on America.

Russiagate was not a media failure. The media these days is just a Democrat messaging operation. Its broadcasts and articles exist to promote the partisan agendas of its political faction. Holding the media accountable for spreading smears, lies and conspiracy theories is like blaming the dog, instead of the owner, when it makes a mess on your lawn. The media makes messes, but it doesn’t originate them.

MSNBC, CNN and the Washington Post can’t and won’t clean up the Russiagate mess. The only one who can is a retired politician dictating books, doing speaking tours and watching TV in her home in Chappaqua, New York. She is also the only person to have escaped a Russiagate reckoning.

Unlike her fellow Democrats, she has nothing at stake in this post-Clinton political order and is happy to watch the country burn, and her party with it, to slake the frustrated anger of her final defeat.

Russiagate is Hillary Clinton’s revenge on everyone. On Trump, on Republicans, and on her own party. If she can’t have the White House, she can still set the agenda by watching her big lie take over the national conversation, hounding Trump and forcing the Dems to fight her war using her last dirty trick.

The only way to stop the damage that the last two years have inflicted on our country is to hold Hillary, Obama, their associates and officials accountable for the catastrophic dirty trick known as Russiagate.

Daniel Greenfield is a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the David Horowitz Freedom Center.
