A little of both. This is their new policy on comments:

"In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info."

Personal attacks? Really? Through a computer? You mean I can throw a snowball at the computer and hit, oh, I dunno, any politico in the head with it? They had something like that on The Twilight Zone--the Fifth Dimension episode.

Policies such as this are reducing discourses to TV Guide cheers and jeers.

Editorial policies shouldn't be this complex--nothing racist by common definitions of it, no swearing, no vulgarity and no threats.Keli Atahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05089132216830000713noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11368628.post-80833120788930283812010-05-30T16:44:51.880-04:002010-05-30T16:44:51.880-04:00it wound up in draft for some reason, not sure exa...it wound up in draft for some reason, not sure exactly how that happenedDaniel Greenfieldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13575285186581875356noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11368628.post-18387538061055928332010-05-30T16:21:00.972-04:002010-05-30T16:21:00.972-04:00What makes this particularly disconcerting is it&#...What makes this particularly disconcerting is it's global nature. Bias is one thing, that's been around as long as the media has been around.

Self-censorship out of fear? That's more troubling.

I can't help but recall the desperate pleas of the Iranian students last year around this time imploring everyone with a cell phone to set it their location to Teheran so the Islamic gov't they were fighting wouldn't be able to hunt them down.

Maybe's that's what companies like Apple, Facebook, and You Tube fear. That we'll start caring about each other and fighting evil with knowledge and making the world smaller.

****

Personal note on censorship--a few weeks ago I came across a police report in which someone was arrested for possession of a drug called Khat. I asked a cop what Khat was, not being familiar with it. She said it was "a Middle Eastern drug."

"Oh, but I wouldn't put that in there."

As if "Middle Eastern" is now a defamatory phrase:(

Shavua tovKeli Atahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05089132216830000713noreply@blogger.com
