We ...The flame is burning and it is not flickering. We are number 4 in the world when it comes to health care. We have one of the strongest armies in the world. Our GDP is higher than that of many Western European nations, and our standard of living is also high. Most of our enemies are too involved in killing each other than paying any attention to us. The majority of our government consists of people who truly love this land, people like Bennet, Shaked, and yes, Bibi. The yerida is at all time low while Aliyah is rising steadily. While the EU is sticking to their antisemitism, India is becoming our ally. The average number of children in a secular family is 3, as opposed to less than 1 in most of Europe. Is that what you call "flickering"? How do I know all of this? Cause I live here. So should you, Daniel.
I am not a hero, I'm just an average guy and I don't have what it takes to live in YESHA.
Israel is not a "political entity", it IS the Jewish Nation. That is what Maccabim fought for, that is why Yair Shtern Z"L sacrificed himself along with many others.
Explaining to Jewish children about the true meaning of Hanukka, is important...as long as you live in the Land.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11368628.post-39094997878331919582014-12-24T02:00:59.721-05:002014-12-24T02:00:59.721-05:00What an awesome piece.

As in the times of the Maccabees, today only a handful of warriors lead the torch in the surrounding darkness. With our sad history as recounted in the Bible and the book of Maccabees, I fear that history will repeat itself and once again the Jewish nation will be forced to exile.HolylandIsraelTourshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06737169920734662636noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11368628.post-26923789482549104162014-12-24T01:22:30.674-05:002014-12-24T01:22:30.674-05:00Douglas, with all due respect, this is a conversat...Douglas, with all due respect, this is a conversation between followers of the Jewish religion. Rabbi Akiva initially supported the Bar Kosiva rebellion. He later repented for this and condemned Bar Kosiva before his final defeat. The majority of the Rabbis opposed the rebellion. Hallacha follows the majority.
If by Jewish nation you mean Jewish people, then we are in agreement. If your definition of Jewish nation is the current Jewish State, then i will have to disagree. We survived without a state for almost 2,000 years and will continue to do so if HaShem allows the the Nations destroy this one. We are still in exile awaiting the Moshiach, HaShem spare us from more Bar Kosiva's.
Freilichen Chanukah
Yisroel TzionAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11368628.post-86005649453761799642014-12-23T12:50:03.220-05:002014-12-23T12:50:03.220-05:00The Rabbis condemned some uprisings and supported ...The Rabbis condemned some uprisings and supported others for factional reasons. Quite a few Rabbis were involved in the Bar Kochba uprisings. Rabbi Akiva's students whom we mourn were killed in the uprisings.

The last bottle of oil was only found as the culmination of an uprising that liberated Yerushalayim. There could be no Chanukah without the Maccabees. When you recite Al Hanissim, you are talking far more of the Macabees than the light.

The Rabbis instituted lesser Chagim and in fact Jews in various parts of the world have celebrated local "Purims".

The Jewish nation and religion are ideally one. There can be no true religion without a nation and no true nation without religion. Attempts to divide them will always create a distorted flawed outcome.

chanukah sameachDaniel Greenfieldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13575285186581875356noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11368628.post-34309437346861979412014-12-23T12:37:57.351-05:002014-12-23T12:37:57.351-05:00"In the wilderness of Judea a band of brother..."In the wilderness of Judea a band of brothers vowed that they would bow to no man and let no foreigners rule over their land." Clarification....the holiday of Chanukah was not instituted by the Rabbis as a commemoration of a nationalist uprising to throw off the yoke of foreign oppression, or to commemorate the miracle of the last bottle of kosher oil burning for 8 days. We have suffered numerous nationalist uprisings and all were condemned by the the Rabbis. The Bar Kochba revolt is a well known example. His real name was Bar Kosiba , son of Kosiba , but he renamed himself Bar Kochba, "Son of Star". The rabbis of his day contemptuously called him Bar Kosiva, "Son of a Lie". The Rabbis never supported nationalist endeavors that were not directly commanded by a Navi (prophet). Their commemoration of Chanukah was no exception.

Neither did the commemorate it as a holiday because of the miracle of the oil. The rabbis don't institute Chagim (holidays) because of miracles. If that were the case the calendar would be full of Holidays. Think about every miracle listed in the Torah (hundreds of them) and this will give you some idea of how many Holidays we would have if a miracles demanded Holidays.
The rabbis commemorated Chanukah for one reason only. Because a small minority (not unlike today) of Jews remained loyal to the Torah given to them by HaShem. They refused to bend to Hellenism ( secularism, assimilation, anti- Torah legislation, etc.) and fought a battle to the death rather than give up one Mitzvah as a compromise to the Syrian Greek Hellenist and their Jewish adherents. The other Rabbinicaly ordained Holiday, Purim, celebrates our overcoming the attempt at our bodily destruction by the Persians. Chanukah mirrors Purim by its celebration of our victory over the Hellenist attempt at our spiritual destruction. Don't wrap a commemoration of Torah observance in nationalist garb. As always, I enjoy your post.
Yisroel TzionAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11368628.post-37828085473778332262014-12-23T05:06:04.315-05:002014-12-23T05:06:04.315-05:00Thank you for your enlightening column Daniel.
